Mesh Hernia Patch
A mesh insert used in hernia repair surgery to repair abdominal hernia defect. This patch has caused serious injury in patients due to a defective recoil ring in the mesh. Bowel perforation, sepsis, infection, scarring and disfigurement have occurred as a result of the defect in this device.
The Hernia patch also know as the Composix® Kugel Mesh Patch is used to repair ventral (incisional) hernias caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after surgery. The patch is placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision. The patch is then held open by a "memory recoil ring" that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place.
The reason that the Kugel Mesh Patch is dangerous is The memory recoil ring that opens the Kugel Mesh Patch can break under the stress of placement leading to bowel perforations and chronic intestinal fistulae. Symptoms may include severe pain, nausea, vomiting, or a large bulge at the site of the previous surgery.
The FDA has placed Composix® Kugel Mesh Patch under a Class I recall. The FDA has said that hospitals and surgeons should stop using the Kugel Mesh Patch immediately and if you have one these patches you should seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms that could be associated with ring breakage such as unexplained or persistent abdominal pain, fever, tenderness at the implant site or other unusual symptoms. If a have a Kugel Mesh Patch have suffered from abdominal pain, fever, tenderness at the incision site, or painful lumps or bulges where surgery occurred, contact your doctor immediately.
