Joe, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, graduated from Spring Hill College in 1993. At Spring Hill, Joe was President of the Student Government Association and President of his social fraternity.

He attended Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. While in law school, Joe was selected to represent Cumberland as a member of its national trial team. The team was a regional finalist in the competition with law schools throughout the United States.

After receiving his law degree, Joe served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Edward B. McDermott, Alabama State Court, 13th Circuit. Following his clerkship, he worked as an associate lawyer with the Mobile, Alabama firm Carr, Alford, Clausen & McDonald. There Joe practiced general civil and criminal defense. He was primary outside trial counsel for a national insurance company, and his trial experience in Alabama included cases ranging from civil wrongful death to the successful representation, through trial, of three capital murder defendants.

In January 2001, Joe was hired as an associate at McKenzie & Taylor. Since 2001, Joe has devoted his practice to representing individuals forced to change their lives or those who have become deprived of a loved one because of another's carelessness. In 2003, Joe's devotion resulted in his becoming a partner at McKenzie, Taylor & Zarzaur.  Mr. Zarzaur continues to be a partner at McKenzie, Taylor & Zarzaur with his main office being in Pensacola, Florida.
